Country: Japan
Name: Honda, Kiku
Gender: Male
Age: 19 (Japan's age is being kept secret by Himaruya sooo EDUCATED GUESS)
Profession: Student/Intern
Highlander or Lowlander?: Highlander
All the strangers look like family
All the family look so strange
All the family look so strange
Appearance: With a less-than average height of 5'5" and a slender, almost femenine, body Kiku can be hard to spot. He has short, tidy, dark brown, almost black hair and a pair of calm light brown eyes. As a student in the Higherlands he wears his school's standard uniform. At home he is quite fond of wearing his light oriental-styled clothing. He owns a formal suit he uses for appropriate gatherings. The suit itself resembles a black uniform with gold accents on the sleeves and shoulders. Such a thing could only be seen in books displaying pictures of clothes that people from the distant past would wear. Befitting to a Highlander.
As his slim frame would suggest, he's not very strong but agile. He displays a kind of elegance that matches his calm composure. Elegant in the sense he keeps a dignified and refined sense of being. (Most of the time) Observing proper manners and giving respect where respect is due. More than often he keeps a straight face. He doesn't smile often but his smiles aren't so rare that one should paint a picture if one were to witness Kiku smiling.
Personality: Honda, Kiku is calm, quiet and composed. Since he was sheltered as a child he is very curious about the things he could only hear about from his father before he died. Among those things are the Lowerlands. His curiosity is accompanied by an open mind to learning new things. Such whimsy is mostly displayed in his fondness for food and cooking. A hobby hapilly supported by his mother. What easily brings a smile to Kiku's face is learning a new recipe from his mother. As such his composure is easily shattered when it comes to food.
His upbringing has taught him to remain calm, think rationally, be polite and respectful. However, he does tend to do some awkward things as a result. He thinks too carefully of what to say. Dont be surprised if he takes more than 10 seconds thinking of what to say before he responds to you. In other situations he will respond only if he is asked to respond. Keeping his opinions unvoiced. This can lead to an undesireble situation. Inspite of this he thinks this is normal and thus, does not notice it. Despite that, what you will get from Kiku is quality. He is genuinely kind and means the best for everyone. If he takes 10 seconds thinking of what to say then you can expect a reply that's worth the wait.
Kiku will object to something if it is truly outrageous. (Or about food) Otherwise he will only complain in his head. He's very polite this way. He takes the other's feelings into account as well as his own. In face of a crisis Kiku will remain calm but he knows when it's time to panic. He's serious when it's time to be serious.
History: Kiku was born into a rich and well respected family. His father worked as a prosecutor. Working against those accused of high end crime. Murder, grand larceny, rape. His image to the public was that of a stern, hardworking and disciplined man. Dedicated to justice against criminals. To Kiku however, he was a loving father and his bestfriend. Since his father was a prosecutor he would come home late. And even after an exhausting day at work his father would come home, walk into Kiku's room and give him a gentle kiss on the cheek as he slept. At least Kiku would pretend that he was sleeping. After waiting twenty minutes or so he would get up from his bed walk into his parent's bedroom and find his father sleeping like a rock, tired from work. He would then climb up the bed and give his father a gentle kiss on the cheek and go back to his room.
Kiku's mother was a little overprotective. She would minimize Kiku going outisde the house and accompany him to and from school. This was simply because she loved her son. Kiku was an only child and she didn't need to work for her husband's income was more than enough to support the family. Kiku would spend time watching his mother cook. Cooking had always been their way of bonding. Kiku's mother would talk about food. Where the recipe came from, the ingredients, special techniques for cooking. Kiku would just listen, taking in all the information. It wouldn't seem like much but this was thier special way of bonding.
One day, when Kiku was 7, his father persuaded his mother to let Kiku go to the Market Place and have some fun. It wasn't very often Kiku could go out of the house if it wasn't to go to school. He and his father had a wonderful time. He saw all kinds of toys and keychains. Food he had never tasted before. It all fascinated him. Living such an enclosed life, only learning from books. He needed this experience outside.
As the sun was setting Kiku's father said, "Let's get going. Your mother will be angry should we go home before dark." Kiku nodded and they started going home. Suddenly a man emerged from the back of a stall. He started running torwards Kiku's father. It happened in a span of 5 seconds. The man dashed to Kiku's father. Drew a knife from his pocket and plunged the knife in his throat. Blood spurted from the wound onto Kiku's face. The death was instantaneous according to the doctors. Apparently the man was the brother of a criminal Kiku's father proved guilty of rape in court. A Lowlander.
Kiku, on the exterior, remained unchanged. If there was anything at all his father taught him it was that you must accept the reality of things and think rationally. It was easy enough. He accepted his father was dead and will never come back home to kiss him on the cheek. As Kiku grew up with his mother thier relationship remained the same. They would bond over food. Because of the incident Kiku would never be allowed to go Neutral areas where Lowlanders and Highlanders could both go to. More so the Lowerlands itself.
The plan remained unchanged. Kiku would finish school, become a lawyer like his father and succeed him in keeping the justice. His curiosity about the Lowerlands however grew in intensity each day. What was there? What kind of people live there? Are they all like the man who killed my father? Are they even human down there? 'Is it curiosity?' he would sometimes wonder. Or perhaps just loathing?
Recurring nightmare: The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Kiku would find himself in the middle of wasteland of rubble, debris and corpses. He himself is severely injured. It hurts so much. His body feels like its been lit on fire, doused with water then burned again. The scene before him is nothing but death. All life, human, animal was extinguished with one 'boom.'

Roleplay Sample: Kiku had nothing to say to his boss. It was torwads the end of World War II. Germany and Italy had surrendered to the Allies. The Allies demanded the surrender of Japan. The alternative was the 'utter and immeadiate destruction of The Japanese Army and its homeland.'
"Empty threats! To give into such a demand is to bring complete dishonor to Japan and its people." Kiku's boss said to the assembly. 'This is heading for disaster. If this keeps up, surely nothing but destruction lies either way. I must carefully piece together what to say in order to present a proper argument.' He thought to himself. Kiku stood up. Now is not the time to be reserved.
"Sir, please consider the facts. Our comrades have fallen. Our reach is withdrawing. The chances of our victory against the Allies, now that we are alone, are slim. If we are to ignore the demands and continue the war we will sacrifice many more men and lose either way. It may certainly be a bluff however if we do not surrender now we will be simply prolonging our defeat and lose more of our contrymen in the process. Look at this--". "Enough." Kiku's boss cut him off.
"Kiku. I am severely dissapointed. Where is your honor? You should know surrender for the Japanese is the same as death. No country in the world, not even America, should have such a weapon. We will fight and we will win." Kiku's boss said, raising his hand against Kiku. "You are dissmissed, Kiku. You will resume your duties when this war is over and the Axis flag is raised on Allied territory." He finished, pointing to the door leading outside.
Kiku bit his lip. Reasoning with such a prideful man was not possible. Not now. 'Perhaps when he sees our territory close in he will surrender and minimize casualties.' He thought hopefully. What Kiku wanted was merely the safety of his country. Victory at the cost of all your countrymen is the same as total defeat. This path reeks of nothing but disaster. He is sure of that. "Sir, such stubborness--" Again cut off. "I said that's enough, Kiku. Go. You are relieved of duty."
Kiku closed his eyes in defeat. He cannot oppose his superior. He opened the door and started to leave. Hearing his boss' voice trail off as he walked. "First we will drive back the Allied forces and attempt to sieze Berlin. We will need the support of all Germans and Italian soldiers still loyal to Nazi Ger..."
Unsure of what to do, Kiku started to walk torwards his office and recollect his thoughts. In the corridor, he passed a familiar guard. "Kiku. How did the meeting go? Will we surrender to the Allies?" He asked as he apporached Kiku, looking concerned. "By the looks of it, we will not. It seems my superior is determined to fight until the end." Kiku stated. A blank expression on his face. "Then surely we have a chance of victory." The guard said optimistically. 'What should I say?' Kiku started to think. 'If I tell him the chances of victory are slim then as a civilian he will spread the news and cause panic. My position is in danger as it is. If my superior were to find out I caused such a panic, my execution would be inevitable.' He silently thought to himself. A difficult expression on his face.
"Kiku?" The guard asked. "Of course." Kiku said with a smile. "The Japanese Empire will surely be victorious. There is no doubt. We will work first on restoring our comrades, the Germans and Italians. Once we get more forces victory is certain." He said. False confidence in his voice. "That is very reassuring." The guard said with a peaceful expression. After hesitating for a few seconds he spoke again in a whisper. "I know this isn't public knowledge but is it true about the demand for surrender coming from the Allies? About the immeadiate destruction of our homeland?" He said, worried that someone might overhear the conversation.
'How does he know of the declaration? This is bad.' Kiku thought. "Please do not tell anyone. However it is indeed true. Word of this must not go public. However, we believe it is all just a bluff." Kiku whispered back. It was true. It was the most logical thing to assume at the time. "It's impossible such a weapon to cause the destruction of our homeland exists." Kiku says with absolute confidence. "I see. Thank you, Kiku. I will surely rest easy tonight." The guard replies.
9 days later, the first atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima.
