Country: Denmark
Name: Mathias Køhler
Gender: Male
Age: 23 years old
Profession: Woodcutter
Highlander or Lowlander?: Lowlander
All the strangers look like family
All the family look so strange
All the family look so strange
Appearance: Mathias has a rough but youthful appearance. He has choppy, unruly blond hair that would occasionally be tucked in an old flat cap. He's taller than most, losing in height to only a few, yet prefers to wear a long black coat that makes him look even taller. When dressed for work, Mathias wears a red and white plaid shirt and dark denim trousers.
The shiny gleam in the felling axe he carries is only rivaled by his bright blue eyes. Because of his work, Mathias's arms are built better than the rest of his physique. Known for always carrying a light atmosphere around him, he is almost never seen without a grin on his face, whether you appreciate it or not.
Personality: Mathias, when put bluntly, is a moron. He's not literally stupid but is immensely terrible at reading the atmosphere and can't take a hint when people have had it with him. You could put a knife to his throat and he still wouldn't get it. Mathias is loud, impulsive and a sore-loser. He can hold grudges for a long time, especially against people he isn't fond of in the first place. Still, Mathias cares deeply for his family and friends. He holds his dearest friends to him like his siblings and treats them like family.
Mathias loves his job. He'd say it himself that he would always have a weird affinity with axes and wood, and yes, he'd always be aware of how strange that sounded. He does have a few things he can boast about without lying. He can cleave through even the thickest tree in an incredible eight chops and he just loves letting everyone know it. He's always the first and last to speak and he'll make sure you hear every single word he has to say.
Despite all this, Mathias is still one of the nicest guys on the island. He almost never means anyone any real harm, although there might be one bespectacled exception. His youthful energy and excitable loudmouth personality will leave an everlasting impression on anyone he meets. And he neither knows nor cares whether it's a good impression or a bad one.
History: Mathias Køhler was born into a poor family that has lived in the Lowlands since the system was first established. His family lived out in the woods, in a sturdy log cabin built long ago by their predecessors. Mathias's dad had always said that all the woodwork in the house was made from a tree chopped down by someone from the Køhler family.
Mathias's dad taught him to respect nature, to respect the trees. Without it, they'd have no home, no fire to keep them warm at night and no livelihood. Eventually, Mathias learned that it was a time-honored Køhler tradition to get your son interested in woodcutting but the sentiment behind it was real enough for Mathias to take up the family axe.
Mathias's mother was a simple housewife; she cared deeply for her son and husband, constantly supportive of the both of them. She would patch Mathias up whenever he got a splinter or had an accident with the axe. Mathias's father taught him all he needed to know about woodcutting: how to hold the axe, the perfect stance, the perfect angle to chop; all of them techniques learned by Køhlers before him. The two of them bonded over their family's ace trade. At his parents' funeral, he had never cried harder in his entire life.
When Mathias was 18, a sudden forest fire broke out in the area. Mathias's wooden house easily caught fire, with him and his family still inside. In the end, Mathias survived but his parents suffocated from the smoke. Now homeless and orphaned, Mathias turned to the closest thing he had to a friend, Berwald Oxenstierna, someone he came to know in college before both of them dropped out. Berwald's parents took Mathias in, much to the former's dismay.
Berwald's family owned a woodwork shop so Mathias decided not to be a useless piece of trash by cutting down the trees they'd need for wood. After a month of living with the Oxenstiernas, however, Mathias resolved to build a new log cabin home from scratch. It would take eight full months for Mathias to succeed in building a new home for the Køhler name to live in. Mathias decided to keep working for the Oxenstiernas, even after he had finished building his new home. Over the years, he was able to expand his small woodcutting business.
Today, Mathias lives alone in his log cabin. The log cabin serves as Mathias's base of operations. There's always a fellow woodcutter taking a break in the kitchen or a few movers having a snack on the porch. He chops down trees and sells the wood to various people, shops and small companies.
Recurring Nightmare: Swedish War of Liberation; when Sweden rebelled against and seceded from the Kalmar Union.
The nightmare starts in a large castle as Mathias is informed Sverige has started a revolt. Mathias doesn't understand what that means as he suddenly hits cold snow. A blond stands over him, a sword at his neck. The sword is dropped and the blond walks away. Mathias is unsure but he yells at him, his anger overflowing. He's never felt that angry before. His anger seems to have been heard as the blond turns around, his figure distorted by falling snow. A pair of blue eyes hits Mathias's own and the nightmares ends.

Likes: Trees- Mathias respects trees. Without them, he'd have no livelihood. He has a personal rule to never chop down a tree that isn't fully grown.
The Family Axe- Mathias takes great care of the family axe that was passed down to him before his parents died. He considers it his greatest possession and values it more than anything else he owns.
Coffee and danishes- Mathias's favorite mid-work snack.
The Oxenstierna family- Mathias considers them to be his second family. He knows that he wouldn't have made it through a very difficult time in his life without them. He sees Berwald as his brother, even if the stoic man doesn't seem to agree at all.
Baking- He likes baking his favorite pastries for him and his co-workers.
Dislikes: Berwald- Mathias may think of him as his brother but there's no one else on the entire island he finds more annoying.
Yeah, that's pretty much all he really dislikes.

Roleplay Sample: An alarm clock began to rang, stirring a tall blond from his slumber. Mathias started to groan, unwilling to start the day just yet. Unfortunately, the alarm clock was unrelenting in its ringing as Mathias reluctantly sat up from his bed. He grabbed the infernal noise maker and shut it off. Seven o' clock AM. The young woodcutter finally got up and proceeded to the kitchen.
Mathias's mood instantly improved as the first swig of coffee entered his system, a content smile appeared on the blond's face as he got a whiff of the black elixir's aroma. After a budget breakfast, Mathias changed his clothes, grabbed his trusty axe off its stand and left his log cabin home for another exciting day in the woods.
"Timbeeeerrrr!!" Mathias howled. A grin came across his face as the sizable tree began to teeter. The tree then fell to the earth and a loud crash echoed through the forest as birds scattered from their perches. "This'll nab me some sizable Sol," the blond said to himself. Mathias started sizing up the fallen tree. After some quick mental measurements, he chopped off the roots and the branches and signaled his boys to come and take the trunk to the supply depot: his backyard.
When Mathias returned to his house, he saw a familiar customer talking to one of his employees. "Speaking of some sizable Sol," he spoke to himself as he approached the elderly man. He hadn't seen him in a while. He definitely got fatter. "Mathias! You've been doing great since my last buy, yeah? Look at all this!" Aleksander said as the woodcutter approached. "Yeah, it's pretty awesome, right? So, what can I do for ya?"
"As always, Mathias, your highest quality lumber. I just ordered quite a few trunks. Around twenty," said Aleksander. Mathias's face lit up. "Oh man, really? Are you serious, Al?" he said, taking Aleksander's hand and shaking it enthusiastically. This was the big buy Mathias needed to get him out of his budget rut. "Thank you, Al, this is just what I needed!" the blond said happily. "Don't mention it, Mathias, don't mention it," Aleksander said, chuckling at the young man's fervor.
Mathias released the burly old man's hand from his grasp. "Would you like some coffee, Al? A danish? They're fresh from the oven!" the blond offered, gesturing to the door behind him. "No thank you, Mathias. I've got to get back to the shop. I look forward to more business from you, m'boy. Stay well!" Aleksander said as he started to leave, giving Mathias a hearty thumbs-up as he did.
"Thanks again, Al! Say hi to tall, blond and scary for me!" Mathias exclaimed.
