Country: Canada
Name: Matthew Williams
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Profession: Student
Highlander or Lowlander?: Highlander
All the strangers look like family
All the family look so strange

Appearance: Matthew is light skined and petite with wavy, light blonde hair that cuts off right right below his ears. A long curl of hair he finds special sticks out in the middle of his forehead, which he won't get rid of because his adoptive mother liked it. He has a very young and innocent looking face, people usually tend to think of him as much younger than he is. He has chubby cheeks that match his rounded face. Matthew's bright violet eyes pop out from underneath his half-rimmed glasses, which almost never leave his face, he's nearly blind without his glasses.
Matthew has a rather petite look to him, despite his average height of 5'9". He tends to shrink his shoulders and slouch which makes him a lot less noticable, a problem he is very hard trying to fix. He's very skinny due to the fact he only eats two meals because he usually forget's about lunch. He has little muscle on his body and is slightly fragile.
Personality: Although Matthew is a Highlander with money to spend, he rarely act's like one, he doesn't feel like he deserves to be one in the first place. He's very frugle and enjoys living a simple life revolving around his school work. He doesn't have very many friends because no one ever notices him, unless they're looking for him, which isn't likely. And he's okay with that, sometimes. Matthew is extremely shy and has panic attacks when thrown into a situation with lots of people. He still wishes that they would notice him. Or at least didn't mistake him for other people. It's a bit more of a let down than just flat out being ignored.
He likes to teach people things he knows, but no one ever seems to really care. Sometimes he'll blurt out random facts that have to do with the situation. If anyone's listening, it might really help. His favorite subject has always been history, and his biggest interest is the old continent "North America". People thought it was a funny name, but he loved it. Sometimes he liked to think of it as his real home. People in North America (probably in the Canadian area because people from the U.S. sounded stupid and violent) would like him, he knew it.
Matthew tells himself that all he wants to do with his life is put smile's on peoples faces, even if he isn't, because he doesn't think he really deserves to anymore.
History: Matthew was born into a Highlander family along with his twin brother and older sister. His father was a CEO of a rich and thriving bussiness and his mother was the trophy wife. He didn't stay with them for long. Shortly after his birth, his parent's gave him to his aunt and uncle and became their adopted child. He still saw his family often and was close to his twin brother. Every time the two brothers were together, they were joined at the hip until he had to be practically ripped apart when one left.
Matthew's new father owned a bakery and taught Matthew to bake everything he knew. Matthew liked to do this with his uncle until he was allowed to work in the kitchen alone and taught himself to cook meals and made them for his family. "This is such a great life!" He would repeat this to himself everyday just because he felt like it. He never got many friends because no one ever noticed him. He didn't mind though, he had his brother and his family for things like that, and it was enough for him.
But not everything could be happy and cheerful forever. When he turned 7, Matthew started sensing something odd from his brother. Matthew tried to ask, his brother began to shut him out completely. A bubble of happy popped in him, and suddenly his brother was less amazing. Matthew got mad at his brother and couldn't shake that feeling after a while. Anger crowded in with that feeling of happiness and nothing was as great anymore. It was childish and, even as a little kid, Matthew knew it was dumb, but he just was mad that his brother didn't trust him. He really began to dislike Alfred when people started to mix them up. Never was his brother called Matthew, but Matthew was constently yelled at in his brothers's place whenever Alfred did sometihng bad. They didn't even look that alike. It was like Matthew's existence had stopped being important and Alfred was better, because who really cared about that Matthew kid anyway? That began his quiet loathing for his brother. Because he hadn't tried to make friends until he was eight, Matthew was left socially awkward and no one was interested in him. At the loss of his brother as a good friend, he just did his homework to take up time. He eventually just kept studying until he wasn't bored anymore. He became a pretty smart kid and learned things past his grade level. At the age of nine, he was allowed to skip a grade, which he did happily.
One night when he was 10 and visiting his blood-related family, a man who had been hanging around Alfred for a few years came into his room to talk with him. He did some strange things to Matthew that made him feel uncomfortable. It clicked in his mind that the man had done the same with his brother, and that was what he was hiding. He felt bad and automatically stopped being mad at his brother. He couldn't even remember what made him mad about his brother anymore and slipped back into his old habit of telling his brother about people who scared him. His brother usually had these issues resolved rather quickly. That man was escorted out rather forcefully the next day, just like Matthew thought.
A day later, Matthew was back home and had just woken up from a good nights rest in his bed. When he went downstairs to start breakfast, he saw the same guy walking through the halls. It freaked Matthew out to see his uncle walking through the house. His uncle simply walked past him and didn't seem to realize he was there. Matthew froze and watched him go up the stairs without saying anything. He didn't know what to do, so he picked up the phone and called the police. It was what he was told to do in a situation like this. Suddenly, there was a scream from upstairs. Matthew ran up the stairs and called out for his parents. When he reached their bedroom door, which was wide open, he didn't know what to do. His father was lying on the floor with his throat slashed and his mother was in the clutches of his uncle. Matthew stood rooted in place and watched as that man abused his mother. Eventually, he couldn't hear anything from her anymore and she wasn't moving. It took fifteen minutes of watching for Matthew's brain to kick back in and tell him to run. So that's just what he did.
He charged down the stairs and ran into a police officer who was standing in his door. He could't hold it any longer and Matthew just started crying. Matthew silently watched as they handcuffed and pulled his uncle out of the house. After an hour of questioning, the police were going to send him to stay with his other family. Plans were changed shortly after seeing the wreckage of the home. When they opened the door and saw the mangled body of Matthew's blood-mother, a kind officer covered Matthew's eyes and pulled him back to the car kicking and screaming. No, no way. He couldn't have been seeing that right. If she was dead... then the rest of the family would have been too. He felt happy with his family just a day before and now he couldn't see them ever again. He should have tried to save his parents when he could. He should have been there when his family was being killed. He should have done something. To him, it was his fault that it happened. In one quick day, everything important to Matthew had been ripped away from him. Shortly after, his uncle was given three life sentences and couldn't bother Matthew again.
Matthew was entitled to the estates and fortunes of both his families because he was the only living heir. Well, the only heir they could find. They never found the body of his brother, and no one knew what happened to it. People just assumed that he had been brought somewhere else to be tortured further and thrown into the ocean. A tiny detail like that didn't matter too much to the police and he was declared dead. But Matthew was so young, he couldn't get to any of it and couldn't legally live alone, so he was put in a orphanage. Rumors flew around about his inherritance and fleabags who were out for his fortune were everywhere trying to get to him. He didn't want to live with any of them because they smelled and looked creepy. The first time he was adopted, his parents accused him of running away because they couldn't find him for a day, a day he had spent in his room, which they had walked into five times. He was sent back to the orphanage because the parents didn't care anymore. One after another, parents would come to find him, but never actually saw him for some reason, even when he was right in front of them.
After eight confusing years in the orphanage, Matthew was allowed to leave at the age of 18, legally an adult and on his own. So he went back to his old home, which was vandilized and broken. He paid for the whole house to be fixed just back to the way it was and began going to a university he had gotten a scholarship for. At the age of 19, nothing has changed and he still feels guilty for everything that happened. He doesn't like touching his inherritance, because he didn't feel like it belongs to him and only uses it for things he needs or thinks are good for his loved ones memories. He lives in his old house all alone and pictures cooking with his uncle, who he thought of as more of a father, and works on the garden that his aunt loved so much. That's his whole life and nothing has changed and he likes it that way.
Recurring nightmare:
The Halifax Explosion, when he has this nightmare all he can think of is the noise and destruction it caused. Fires, broken trees, homes tumbling to the ground and the complete confusion. When he wakes up, he feels as though someone shot his foot.

Likes:
Pancakes. These are the most amazing things in the world to him. It's usually his meal for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Maple Syrup. Heaven in a bottle. He likes it on his pancakes, but sometimes he drinks it straight from the bottle.
Hockey. Just a beautiful sport in general. It's always been his favorite.
History. History is really the most important subject. Learning from past mistakes is one of the most important things to living.
Being noticed. He never feels like it happens, but when it does, it feels nice.
Cleaning. Living alone tends to make simple things like this fun.
Cooking. It reminds him of being happy with his real family.
Speaking to people. It's fun and a rare thing because people don't usually notice him. He usually messes up when he does speak with people though.
Dislikes:
Obnoxious people. Why would he like them? They ruin library's and interrupt thoughts. And usually step on him.
Theifs. He can't stand it when people steal. They should think about how important somethings are.
Being overlooked. He's not made of air. He's made of everything other humans are. It's not like he's actually invisible, right?
Being alone. Living in his house scares him sometimes. He still expects his "uncle" to walk in and kill him just like he did with everyone else.
Crowds. He gets pushed around when he's in them and something about them seems ominous to Matthew, so when ever he sees them, he tends to run in the other direction.

Matthew looked out the window in his bedroom and tapped his pencil against his desk. He had begun to write the outline for his next school paper, but it just didn't seem interesting as the setting sun. The beautiful orange-red orb cast beams through the slowly darkening sky. Purple turned to blue and outlined the sun perfectly. A light breeze drifted in through his window and rustled his hair. Matthew sighed and locked his window shut before shuffling out his chair. He stretched with a yawn and began to walk through his house aimlessly. He wanted to clean something, but he had just done that a few hours ago and nothing was out of place. His violet eyes shifted towards the door to his basement. I wonder what's down there... Matthew reached for the door handle. Unlatching it, he opened the door and peaked his head through the door.
He couldn't see anything past the tenth step and the light switch didn't work. Right as he was about to give up on the idea, he spotted a flashlight on the first step. He picked it up, turned it on, and began his trek down into the unkown darkness. He felt nervous and his knees were shaking. For some reason it scared him to go down there. Matthew hadn't even gone to the basement when he was little because he wasn't allowed to, and he never knew why. The mystery is what scared him more than the fact he was walking down stairs that could break at any moment or that it was completely black.
Once he reached the last step, he wasn't suprised at what was down there. The space down there was tight and slightly damp on the walls. Matthew flashed the light around and didn't see much. Mostly spider webs and a hell of a lot of boxes with an inch of dust on them. He brushed his hand across one of the boxes, stirring dust into the air. He covered his mouth with a cough and inspected the box further. In faded permanent marker was the word 'Matthew'. His curiousity peaked and he lifted the cover of the box before looking inside. More dust coated the contents.
He sneezed before putting the cover back on the box. He lifted it into his arms, it was a bit heavier than he expected. He stumbled back up the stairs and brought the box into his living room. Matthew dropped the box heavily onto the carpet with a groan and plopped down on the ground next to it. He removed the lid once more and started picking up the objects in the box. The first thing he found was a teddy bear, which used to be his favorite thing when he was younger. But he never knew it's name, it changed weekly. Something like Komijari? No... Kumijora? It didn't matter, he only liked it because it was very soft and squishy.
Next he found a picture of him when he was probably around the age of eight. It was adorable. Matthew always liked how cute of a kid he was, just because it made it easier to get out of trouble. After a little more digging around, Matthew found a picture of himself with another kid... He dropped the photo and covered his mouth. It was his brother. His twin brother who went missing when they were 10... Matthew's eyes began to sting with tears and he put the picture away from him. He couldn't bring himself to search any longer after he found a picture of him sitting with his whole family. His vision became too blurry and clouded with tears to see much anyway. He blamed it on the dust before going back to his room.
He laid down on his bed still fully dressed and tried to go to sleep. He didn't want to stay awake anymore.
