Disappeared
Country: Taiwan (Republic of China)
Name: Mingxia Chen [ I can't seem to find the website where I found it, but it said something about Mingxia meaning something along the lines of "gentle fighter, hardworker", etc. As for Chen, I have a friend who is first-generation Taiwanese-American, so I used her last name. ]
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Profession: Student, part time entrepeneur
Highlander or Lowlander?: Highlander

All the family look so strange
All the family look so strange
Appearance: Mingxia is short, but delicate in stature, with deep brown eyes and back-length hair to match. She's never seemed to tame that stubborn lock of hair that springs from her hairline in a long, loose curl, but she prefers to distract anyone looking, with some kind of large flower that she always wears opposite the ahoge.
As a Highlander, she has somewhat expensive taste, but her outfits are never too extravagant or revealing. She likes to wear flowy, twirly skirts and pretty, feminine blouses, in brights or pastels, and carries a yellow silk purse that her aunt in the Lowlands made her. All in all, she dresses like a girly-girl.
Personality: Mingxia is a worrywart- simply put. She is a complete bleeding heart, overly caring for everyone and everything around her. She is sentimental through and through. That being said, she also blames herself for a lot of things, whether the fault is hers or not, and apologizes all the time.
However, she has moments of stick-to-it-iveness that border on obstinate, that she supposes comes from her Asian ancestry. Her innocent facade can be tainted by her street smarts and sharp mind, and if she smells a liar, consider the deal off. Her keen talent for business and enterprise shine in these moments; she will take advantage of a bad situation to sweeten the deal in her favor in any way she sees fit.
History: Mingxia Chen was born October 25th to a branch of a wealthy family that dealt in computers. The main branch headed by her uncle, the Wang family, have one son and apparent heir, Yao. Mingxia has been jealous of the fuss the rest of the family makes over him since she was little, but has no reason to truly hate him... yet. Despite her parents' warnings, she still makes harsh competition for Wang Yao when she can, but she's never outdone him. Part of why she keeps struggling to challenge him is to keep herself in the family, and not end up like her aunt.
Back when the brutal traditions of pre-Solus China were still rather widely practiced among true Chinese, Mingxia's father, uncle and aunt were born. By virtue of not only being a girl (who cared if the world had ended, the family had no room for girls), but the youngest sibling, her aunt was discarded. While Mingxia's uncle came to inherit the head family status and her father the support family, when she became of age, Mingxia's aunt was cut off from the family altogether and sent to live in the Lowlands to work at the factory her own family owned.
This didn't stop Mingxia's father from worrying about his sister, of course; in secret, he sent a then-11-year-old Mingxia to check on her. This was when her aunt presented her with the purse, something she'd spent a good amount of her earnings to make when she'd heard about Mingxia's birth, and a green wallet with a lotus embossed into the leather. On her way home, though, the young Chen girl ran into trouble.
She'd spent too long sharing stories and bonding with her aunt before finally making herself leave, as the sky turned color and dusk fell. In the looming twilight, Mingxia had wandered into an area crippled by gang war, and was almost shot at as a streetfight broke out. She managed to get out of the line of fire without getting hurt, huddling behind a bush in shocked terror as she listened to the screaming and fighting and the fire of sawed-off shotguns, until finally the noise shifted into women's wailing for lost sons and brothers.
Mingxia made it home safely but didn't tell anyone about the fight.
She had once been somewhat happy and carefree as a child should be, until that fateful February 28th. It was then that her nightmares started.
Now sixteen, Mingxia is a completely different person when she's by herself. And she doesn't know who that person is anymore.
Recurring nightmare: Being called by someone else's name, and being mocked when trying to assert otherwise, as well as watching everyone she knows being killed by the military and not being able to do anything about it. A word also seems to appear in her dreams regularly: Kuomintang.

Likes:
[ flowers ] - She tends to pick them and put them in her hair for some reason. It just feels right to.
[ most other people ] - to the extent that she worries about others so deeply it's considered self-sacrificial.
[ making money ] - She is pretty good at it, too. She makes a good deal of money from her various enterprises, despite her fierce competition with her fellow Asian classmate, Wang Yao.
[ old k-pop ] - She found some old CDs and decided to listen to them, despite not understanding the words; her favorite artist of the few CDs she's collected is SHINee.
[ bubble tea ] - So delicious! But, she cannot make it herself, what if she adds too much boba? O-or suppose she catches her hand in the sealing device?
Dislikes:
[ large animals ] - They make her nervous. Well, more nervous. Farm animals, anything taller than her (and she's pretty short), they all unnerve her.
[ spicy foods ] - She's not used to them, so she generally stays away from them because she fears they'll blow out her tastebuds.
[ potentially dangerous things/situations ] - As a worrywart, this shouldn't surprise you.
[ being talked down to ] - it reminds her of her nightmare, and she dwells on it internally for a lot longer than she appears to.
[ hoodrats ] - She really doesn't like people who dress like they belong on a trashy reality show. Having a slightly more wholesome and cute taste in clothing, Mingxia wonders why it's even a trend.

Roleplay Sample:
"Miss? Excuse me, miss...?" Mingxia jumped a few feet at the cashier's voice as she walked away from the counter. "Y-yes, what's wrong...? O-oh, did I come up short? No, they must be out of taro... I-I'm sorry, I can change my order if you like...!" she stammered as she pivoted on her heel and rushed back to the register. The cashier merely chuckled and gave her a slight smile, as though her worrying amused him.
"No, miss, that's okay- you just forgot your wallet, is all..." The bubble tea cashier held out a little green wallet, leather dry and cracking around the lotus design that was embossed the front of it from her habitual tracing of the outline. Her parents always pushed her to replace the wallet that her aunt had given her- it was old, and 'probably counterfeit, knowing it came from the Lowlands'- but Mingxia had refused every time. The way she drew the lines of that lotus with her finger had become a calming thing for her; it had the same effect on her nerves as meditating did, and very little else in her life gave her the same feeling.
"O-oh, my goodness! Thank you so much, I can't afford to lose that...! Oh, my goodness..." she gushed as she fought her way out of her sleeves to put the billfold in her yellow silk purse. She really couldn't afford to lose her wallet- it had about 80 hard-earned Sol in it, after all, collected from her flower sales from the last school dance. She looked up at the man as she considered his kindness. He looked maybe a little older than her, maybe college-age, but definitely a Lowlander from his accent. She plucked her wallet back out, fished a Sol out of the fat stack of bills. "Here- for your trustworthiness," she urged, offering it to him. He shook his head. "I'm not supposed to take tips, it's against policy-"
"But it's not every day you have to deal with such a fussy customer, is it?" she pointed out as if it were actually true. The cashier laughed. "Actually, miss, you're not as fussy as some of the others. Besides, I've seen you come in here before, and you were just as polite then." Mingxia blushed. "Take it as pay for your flattery then!" she suggested, and held it out to him again. He finally took it, chuckling as he stashed it in his back pocket and watched the cute regular went to sit down.

Any other information: I do all my own graphics, icons, and posting layouts! If anyone wants me to do anything for them image/aesthetics-wise, I'd be glad to ~
Also, I am more comfortable in a chatroom setting when it comes to roleplaying, but I also write drabbles and have done paragraph-format RP lots of times, so I'm just as capable in that sense. I just like to chat is all. :3
