Country: The Southern Half of the Italian Republic (Repubblica Italiana) / Italy Romano
Name: Lovino Vargas
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Profession: Works at a relatively popular café
Highlander or Lowlander?: Highlander
All the strangers look like family
All the family look so strange
All the family look so strange
Appearance: Lovino is a young man on the short side of average. He's relatively skinny and doesn't have much muscle, either. His skin is faintly olive, but not to a great degree. His eyes are hazel-coloured, but if you look very closely there are tinges of green in them. His hair is a chestnut colour, and it's always very short and straight so that he doesn't have to pay much attention to it. One of his most distinctive features is the strange haircurl that sticks right up from the right side of his head. (It yields an… Interesting reaction when pulled.)
Clothes-wise, he wears clothes on the nicer side that are typical of a Highlander, though he doesn't pay much attention to them, placing comfort above looks. He likes wearing very loose and baggy clothing. Lots of the time, he buys clothes that are one size bigger than the one that fits him perfectly, even though he isn't growing anymore. Because he doesn't pay much attention, some of his clothes are a bit beat-up.
Personality: At first glance, Lovino is simply an incredibly grumpy individual. His reaction to even the most minor inconveniences is to swear up a storm, he refers to everybody as a 'bastard', and seems to have a frown permanently etched onto his face. He has a very short temper when it comes to people and talks really big when it comes to threats, though he's more than a bit of a coward in reality. However, like most people, perhaps more so than most people, there are a lot of layers to his behaviour.
Above all, Lovino absolutely hates to be alone. As long as there's somebody he can talk to, even if he's just yelling at them, he's okay, but the moment he's alone the feeling comes over him very strongly and he becomes incredibly on edge, so it's something he likes to avoid at all costs. When he's home alone, he's alright, but he seems to lose every ounce of his energy. However, another thing that Lovino opts to avoid most of the time is affection. When somebody shows physical affection towards him, he becomes incredibly flustered and will attempt to push them away. If he really really likes somebody, he'll try to overcome his problems with affection, but most of the time he just ends up freaking out. Genuine compliments also make him incredibly uncomfortable, but if it's just lip service he can handle it.
That being said, he's almost as good at lip service as he is at swearing. If there's a relatively pretty lady standing nearby and he's feeling lonely he will definitely go up and flirt with her to start a conversation, but if she starts flirting back he'll forget what he's supposed to do. (He's not actually terribly interested in woman, but only in the deepest and darkest depths of his mind will he ever acknowledge that he likes men.) He doesn't particularly like sucking up to people, but he'll do it if it's absolutely necessary.
In his spare time, Lovino sketches, cooks and watches TV, mostly. Sometimes he'll go explore the Lowlands, but not terribly often anymore. He doesn't bother keeping things in his house very clean or pretty. If it's livable and he can find everything, he really doesn't find any reason to worry. This is his attitude towards work in general: if it's not absolutely necessary, don't do it. But if you yell at him enough, he'll try.
History: ((Certainly willing to change once a Rome, North Italy, or a Seborga show up.))
Lovino's father was a screenplay writer and his mother was a makeup artist. They met briefly while working and somehow continued to meet up. Lovino was born shortly after they married, and two years later his brother was born. He remembers very little about his early years and his brother, though, as once he was four, his parents split up, believing they'd be better as friends. Lovino went to live with his mother, his brother went with his father, and they ended up seeing very little of each other.
His mother was a bit doting, though he was uncomfortable with affection even then and she reined herself in most of the time. She also liked to dress him up, to the level of putting him in dresses sometimes, but she stopped when he started going to school. (Nowadays, Lovino refuses to acknowledge that this ever happened.)
He was an incredibly quiet child, so he didn't make friends at first. However, since he felt so lonely, he quickly began to imitate the 'cool' kids, so he ended up learning how to swear at an early age and made it part of his every day vocabulary. He ended up being kicked out of that kind of group once he got mad at them for bullying a lonely kid in their class, and he was a bit of a loner for most of his school years. He never did defend another child from bullying, but if he was ever the target he'd defend himself viciously and they eventually learned to leave him alone completely.
However, he did make one very close friend once he hit thirteen, who was a girl named Jen, who was a new kid who thought he looked lonely. She had a fascination with the Lowlands and often dragged him off to look around. He grudgingly found it interesting, too, and continued to visit, sometimes on his own time and even sometimes dragging her along with him. However, she fell in love with him, she misinterpreted Lovino's uncomfortableness about affection as a crush and then she confessed her feelings to him. He turned her down, having no interest in girls even then, and she took it incredibly personally, leaving him friendless again.
He graduated without much fanfare and no huge ambitions, so believing that his only skill was cooking, he simply decided to work at a café and rent an apartment, which is where he is to this day.
Recurring nightmare: ((This is more centred around character than history, but if you'd like me to find a historic event, I will.))
Wandering around Spain's house endlessly while he waits for him, or at least somebody to come back so he's not completely alone anymore.

Roleplay Sample: Lovino wasn't quite sure how he had ended up talking to this idiot, really. It wasn't as if he had asked the guy to stand by the counter and talk to him or anything.
Well, okay, maybe the café was close to closing and Lovino thought that the guy looked really fucking depressed, so he had started talking to him in the first place.
Then, the guy just went ahead and talked about his work. As an accountant. Fun.
"Yeah, it gets tiring sometimes, day after day of numbers," no shit, "but I get by, you know?"
"Hmm." was Romano's reply. Seriously. When you were depressed, you weren't supposed to talk much, dammit. It meant that the other person couldn't get straight to the point and help. N-Not that he really wanted to help. After all, this guy was getting really fucking annoying, and maybe he hadn't been that depressed in the first place if he was able to bounce back this quickly…
Well, better to get straight to the point than beat around the bush. It required less work, most of the time.
"Oi," the other man looked at Lovino curiously, "why did you look so depressed before?" (He had to seriously resist the urge to add a 'dammit' to the end of that sentence.)
"Uh," that certainly made the man stop talking for a moment, "well, um, I had a fight. With my sister. Who I'm the legal guardian of."
Lovino winced a little in spite of himself. He was definitely not the person to go to for sibling advice. Or legal guardianship advice. He was far from being good with kids. They always wanted to cling to you.
"Well, I don't know much about that kind of stuff. I have a brother, but I don't talk to him much…" which was more than a bit of an understatement.
"Y-Yeah," the man was now avoiding eye contact, "my sister's teenaged, so she's just acting up, I suppose…"
"Don't just suppose," man, even Lovino could see what this guy was doing wrong, "go ask her what's wrong, dammit."
"But are you sure that she'll appreciate me butting i-"
Lovino pushed him towards the door.
"Just go. It's five minutes until we close, so I would've kicked you out anyway."
"Um, okay, thanks." he started walking a little, but Lovino decided that he wasn't fast enough and pushed him again. The man started walking very quickly after that, practically whipping out the door and around the corner.
Lovino sighed. Now that he had been nice to the guy to fill up his 'once-a-week-and-sometimes-very-rarely-more' niceness quota, he supposed it was time to close up the shop.
