"Oh. Okay," he mumbled as he looked down at his feet, his voice barely above a whisper. He wasn't sure why he cared so much about this but he could feel the back of his throat become sore. Raivis had been really excited to be able to share an activity with someone. He hadn't expected his idea to be shot down so quickly but then again besides her name he knew nothing of Atawhai. Not wanting to give up so easily he blurted it out before he even knew what he was doing.
"Then let me help you! I can do errands for you or help on your farm," he suddenly insisted. He figured he was probably going to end up in labour work anyway no matter if he went to school or not, he might as well get a head start. Not to mention he'd be helping out Atawhai and after she was nice enough to help him it was the least he could do. Raivis looked up at her expectantly, hoping for a positive answer. Looking back on it, he probably could have just suggested that they study together after she was done teaching but by the sounds of things she worked hard enough already.

Atawhai felt kind of bad, shooting his idea down... she could've at least pretended to think about it for a few more minutes. When he suddenly blurted helping her in the farm, she was a bit taken back. He seemed to be intent on helping her, regardless.
"Are you sure you want to help? It's a lot of work under the Sun." Atawhai smiled. She never had anyone help her in her farm before. She looked at Raivis and wondered if his parents would let him. He stated before that his parents worry a lot, and working at a farm wasn't really safe... the worst that could happen was a chicken poke an eye out. And then there was William, who doesn't like male humans around Atawhai. Atatwhai could defend Raivis if William wanted to headbutt him, but she couldn't be with Raivis all the time.

He nodded eagerly. No matter what he had his heart set of paying her back in any way possible. This time she didn’t seem so hesitant about the idea.
“I’ll be okay. I probably need to get out of the house more anyway,” he chuckled. Raivis had never spent a great deal of time out in the sun so he didn’t know how hard it could really be. In his mind though he felt like it was something he could take. The animals hadn’t even crossed his mind. In fact if he knew there were animals he might think differently. For some bizarre reason, non-human creatures had an intense dislike for him. When he was younger he used to have scratches all up his arm from where cats he’d tried to pet in the street had clawed at him. Now he knew better.
By now the sun was starting to set and an orange glow bathed the two of them. He looked back at his house and then back to her. Even in such a short space of time he felt like he’d come a long way. Shifting between dreams and reality probably did that to you.
At least he hadn’t really been shot.

Atawhai looked at the boy in front of her. He seemed really enthusiastic about helping her. He probably didn't have any expirience, either. Could she really give this boy a job like farming? Atawhai looked at the sunset and smiled.
It wouldn't hurt to try.
"Okay," she started, looking back down at Raivis "talk about it with your parents, I'll stop by tomorrow to hear their decision." Atawhai said with a calm smile on her face. After she finished work tomorrow, she'd also have to buy Raivis a pair of sturdy gloves and some sunscreen, just in case.
Help. Who would've thought Atawhai would have someone help her. The thought alone made her smile.

The moment she said yes his expression became bright.
“Thank-you so much! I promise I’ll do my best!” he smiled. Raivis was a little unsure of how his parents would react to the news. On the one hand they might try and talk him down, saying it was too hard. On the other hand they might be happy he was finally making friends. Either way he had to pay her back somehow, even if they didn’t let him they might have some other ideas for him.
Although, there was the small fact that he’d had to tell them what happened to him. In the back of his mind he wondered if he could lie and say that he’d responded to an ad for help and he figured it was a good way to get out of the house and gain a decent work ethic.
It was worth a shot.
“My house is the one just on the corner,” he pointed a short way away from him. “Thank-you so much for everything Atawhai.”
Taking the bags from the floor he gave one last smile before heading back home. “I’ll see you tomorrow!” he yelled back, waving with his free hand.
