[14 Years Before Present Day]
"All right class. This is your new classmate Roderich Edelstein. He'll be joining our class for awhile. Let's all greet him. Hello Roderich."
He felt the teacher pat his shoulder reassuringly as the class droned out a "Hello Roderich." He tugged nervously at the borrowed school jacket he was wearing until his new one could come.
"Okay, let's see, there's a seat available next to the window there at the back." She pointed to a desk in the corner next to the window.
He made his way to the back. He heard the whispers of the children around him.
'What a weird name', 'He's wearing the wrong coat', then snickering 'He's got the girls' coat on,' and finally, 'Maybe he thinks he's a girl.'
He glanced around at the other students and then down at his temporary suit coat. He was wearing the girls jacket. The old woman in the school office had grabbed out the wrong suit coat.
He quickly slid into his assigned seat and set his books on top of the desk. A girl with long dark brown hair tied back and braided with a ribbon sat in the desk in front of him. A pale-skinned boy with white hair and bright eyes sat in the desk to the right of the empty one. The teacher turned back around and started writing on the board, lecturing as she did so.
He could sense the eyes of the other kids on him as they kept sneaking glances his way. He laid his head on his books and stared listly out the window. He wondered if it opened. He wondered about jumping out. He wondered if Tante Marie would even notice if he ran away. He knew his father or grandmother wouldn't. They were the ones who sent him away to his great-aunt's house after his mother died. That thought reminded him of how much he missed her. He wished she could come back or he could go with her to where ever it was that people go to in the sea when they die. A tear filled his eye and he quickly brushed the offending drop away.
